Presence Matters More Than Words

As a new officer, I spent a lot of time thinking about what to say.

I replayed conversations in my head. Wondered if my words landed the way I intended. Questioned whether I explained things clearly enough or confidently enough.

What I eventually realized was this:
People were learning more from how I showed up than from anything I said.

They noticed my posture before my instructions.
My tone before my explanation.
My calm—or lack of it—before my words.

Leadership presence is communicated long before language enters the picture.

When pressure rises, people don’t just listen—they observe. They look for cues. They read behavior. They sense hesitation, clarity, or confidence in subtle ways.

I learned that presence isn’t about projecting authority. It’s about grounding yourself. Staying composed. Being intentional.

When leaders are present, teams feel steadier. When leaders are distracted or reactive, teams absorb that too.

Presence matters—because leadership is felt before it’s understood.
